Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), la salud mental es una de las áreas más desatendidas de la salud pública. Por otro lado, tener problemas de salud mental y por último, la imagen social estigmatizada de la salud mental con respecto a otras complicaciones de salud, sufriendo el riesgo de rechazo, aislamiento y exclusión social. Por tanto, estamos ante tres categorías diferentes de discriminación (mujer, Salud mental/discapacidad y estigma social) que interactúan de manera simultánea.
Otro aspecto importante de mencionar es que las mujeres con problemas de salud mental, enfermedades mentales y/o en situación de discapacidad, no han sido tomadas en cuenta a la hora de luchar por sus derechos quedando excluidas e invisibilizadas durante todos estos años. Para las personas en general, ellas han sido consideradas durante años como objetos que debían ser atendidas, pero nunca como sujetos titulares de derechos y por lo tanto, protagonistas de su propia historia, reproduciendo las inequidades, legitimando las diferencias de poder y la exclusión social. .
En diversas oportunidades las mujeres con problemas de salud mental son estereotipadas y etiquetadas con frases tales como “vagas”, “incapaces”, “flojas”, “malas madres”, “desaliñadas”, “histéricas”, “sensibles” e “inferiores”. Estas percepciones también las condicionan con su entorno al momento de expresarse, porque se le da poca credibilidad a su relato y se les descalifica cuando sufren y argumentan algún tipo de abuso o violencia. De esta forma internalizan los prejuicios sociales, asumiendo una condición de inferioridad que genera sentimientos de vergüenza, humillación y culpabilidad.
Finalmente. se ha estado trabajando en los últimos años para minimizar el estigma y sensibilizar a la comunidad, sin embargo, este proceso pasa también por el empoderamiento de las mujeres, el reconocimiento de sus necesidades específicas en salud mental, la organización y participación ciudadana, que se escuche su voz y la discriminación que sufren y de esta forma efectiva visibilizar la realidad que padecen.
